[Subject]HELP! Have a Trojan on my PC?
[Question]
How do I get it off!?
Windows Defender is trying to deal with it but Norton 360 just seems to lock up
Just scanned with Windows Defender and it says, no threats but I'm still getting odd behaviour from my PC
^ That was after I told it to remove it

Hi So Alone,
Here's a guide to malware removal including trojans, definitely use the free McAfee Stinger tool that is referenced....
In order to successfully remove malware infections (viruses, spyware, adware etc) from your PC you need to follow a methodical approach as well as using effective (and free) tools. There’s a decent guide covering this that you can work through at My Slow PC http://www.MySlowPC.co.uk/ – click on the “Troubleshooting” link. Here’s my advice from it:
1.) Turn System Restore OFF so any infection that you remove is not restored.
2.) Scan with a combination of the best detection utilities as you’ll find different scanners can sometimes pick up different infections. E.g.
* McAfee Stinger – a free stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses.
* SpyBot Search & Destroy – a spyware/adware scanner
* Lavasoft Adaware – for spyware/adware
Note – it might be a good idea to disconnect your network connection once you’ve updated them with the latest virus/spyware definitions. This is due to the fact that often an infection is trying to spread over your network.
3.) If the above fails or you’re not sure if you’re still infected, when you start your PC tap the F8 key, select “Safe Mode” and repeat the scans once you’re connected.
I hope the above helps, as mentioned the guide above is a lot more detailed and the My Slow PC site is pretty useful. Good luck!

Hi, If you know the name of the Trojan then you can try to Google for it to see if there is a manual way to remove it. Depending on the infected files you may need to us SAFE mode to remove it successfully.

This is a great spyware/malware removal guide techsupportalert.com: http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/spyware-removal-guide.htm .
The scanner Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware on there is a good trojan scanner as well as excellent at dealing with rogue security programs.
I also like SUPERAntiSpyware that is also mentioned there and recommended by others too.
True Colors @ 2009-07-04 03:27:09
The first thing to do is immediately turn off your modem so the trojan cant download information, then run a virus scan in safe mode

You need anti-virus protection with real-time protection (shields). One that is up to date and able to receive virus definitions every day. Here is where you can read about the best commercial anti-virus programs: http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ . As you can see on this site BitDefender Antivirus 2009, Kaspkersy Anti-Virus 2009, and Webroot Antivirus are the top three. You should have only one anti-virus program installed on your computer. Because anti-virus programs have real time protection more than one can cause conflicts and not work as well. And you must have one to protect your computer at all times. You can safely use online virus scanners to supplement your main anti-virus program. Here is a link for some free online scanners:
http://www.johannrain-softwareentwicklung.de/e_online_antivirus_scan.htm
If you cannot afford to pay for an anti-virus protection then you should get one of the free anti-virus software available. They are not as good as the commercial ones but still can do a good job and are very necessary. You can read about the free ones here: http://www.techsupportalert.com/pc/security-tools.html . Look under “ Best Free Antivirus Software.”
But anti-virus protection is not enough. You also need anti-spyware protection that has real time protection. One of the top rated commercial ones is Webroot Spy Sweeper. Two of the best free spyware scanners are Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and SUPERAntiSpyware. These will not have real time protection that commercial ones do. But you would use them to scan. You should use at least 2 free ones that do not have the real time protection. If you have a commercial anti-spyware program you can still use a couple free ones without real time protection to supplement. You can find free anti-spyware programs on the same link as above but look under “Best Free Adware/Spyware/Scumware Remover.” On the same link you can look into free trojan scanners too. The best commercial one is Trojan Hunter.
An important point: If your computer gets infected, once your computer is clean and working normally just to be on the safe side turn off system restore and wait 30 seconds, turn it back on and create a new restore point. This way it gets rid of anything bad that might have gotten saved in a restore point and you have a clean restore point to use in the near future if needed. Do not turn it off until your computer is clean and working normally because you might need to use it if something goes wrong during the clean-up process. It is better to go back to an infected restore point if something goes wrong then to not be able to undo changes that were damaging. You can always scan again.
Here is an excellent article to learn how to be safe on the internet, http://surfthenetsafely.com/index.html . It covers everything from viruses, spyware, and firewalls in great detail. The links in it that do not work right are pointing to the link I gave above from techsupportalert.com ( or gizmo's freeware). So just use the one above. This is also a good article to read from techsupportalert.com: http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/spyware-removal-guide.htm .
Be sure to also scan any external hard drive, flash drive, USB storage device that you use as well. I have even heard that iPods can be infected so be sure to scan those too.
One last important note. Often free security programs have to be manually updated while the commercial ones have automatic updates. It is vital that you keep your security programs up to date with the latest malware definitions or they will be useless.

i suggest avira with spyware doctor starter edition
or avast with superantispyware
both are free
always download from the makers site never a 2nd or 3rd party --less chance of an error or infection
avira.com
pctools.com --spyware doc starter edition
avast.com
superantispyware.com
Mark @ 2009-07-04 04:30:36
best trial is webroot or bitdefender and is worth being paid for ! ., if you want trial then avast or avira is good but not that much compared to paid versions ! (obviously) ! , so if you go with trial bitdefender or webroot is good and avast is good if free !

I found a very useful and free Web safety tool called McAfee SiteAdvisor. It adds safety ratings to search results and the sites you visit to help protect you from spyware, adware, spam, and identity theft. I thought you might also want to try McAfee SiteAdvisor so you can stay safer online.
To try McAfee SiteAdvisor, just go to their home page and click "download." It's free and only takes about 30 seconds.
Another is Norton Safe Web from Symantec.

A virus is a nasty program which can delete your personal files and system files, make your computer not work like its suppose to and the worst part is it can destroy your computer by permanently shutting it down which means you can't use your computer anymore even if you take it to a computer shop. Prevent and delete viruses with antivirus programs
alienforce @ 2009-07-04 02:57:46
Well its either you have a virus,
Or a hacker was on your account sending friends who are online websites with viruses in them,
I think you should download Norton antivirus, and it willl not happen again.
Don't worry my friends do that to me when they don't know.
Then they tell me they have a virus. >.>
Angel L @ 2009-07-04 02:59:46
Bah, people these days. Disregard any recommendation to buy Norton. I had it and it screwed me over. Not only did it do nothing, it attracted viruses (certain viruses were created solely to challenge Norton), and then got taken over by a virus, which ended up making Norton download even more viruses. We reformatted and were actually better off with no protection than with Norton. Waste of money, that was.
Moving on... I'd first question the veracity of her statement. If you trust her though, then I'd figure something's up. The person who said your account could be "hacked" is forgetting a key issue: you can't be logged in on two computers at the same time. Therefore, it would be your own computer sending the stuff. In addition, it would be more of a crack than a hack, since Facebook is relatively difficult to hack, and no true hacker would want to hack your personal account. Change your password and the problem would be solved.
This leaves one answer: YOU have a virus. They can make your computer do some pretty nasty things, including send the virus out to more people. If she's telling the truth, then I would probably turn the internet off of your computer, use another computer for troubleshooting online, and try to remove the virus.
I would recommend AVG or Malwarebytes for cleaning your computer, both of which are available for download.
For virus names, we would need a description of further symptoms.
MaryAnn @ 2009-07-04 03:09:24
I'd go with mary ann, she makes sense and recommendations are spot on, could be you have the same virus and need to scan for it.

YAHOO VIRUS/WORM?
That is a sign that you have a virus or worm on your computer that can be spread through yahoo messenger and even via email. Never click on links somebody sends you unless you are sure it can be trusted. This goes for email too. You might think it is from a friend but it is really not. Infected computers can target everybody on somebody's contact list. This article on how to avoid instant message viruses is informative: http://www.microsoft.com/protect/computer/viruses/im.mspx
Uninstalling yahoo messenger will not remove the infection from your computer. You need to run anti-virus and anti-spyware scans. Below I give more detailed instructions about internet safety and scans that are recommended.
You need anti-virus protection with real-time protection (shields). One that is up to date and able to receive virus definitions every day. Here is where you can read about the best commercial anti-virus programs: http://anti-virus-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ . Oh yes and be sure to warn you contacts about this computer malware so that they do not click the links you might be sending them and tell them you are going to scan your computer.
