Best anti-virus to use?

Best anti-virus to use?
[Question]
What is the best anti-viral software to use that DOESN'T slow your computer down?

I used AVG and while that is a good anti virus my computer at start up slowed down quite badly.

I think Avira anti virus is the best one for free. But Nod32 and Mcafee are good, but slow down computer abit.
Nawaz S @ 2009-06-25 03:52:02

Kasperkey..
krm29619 @ 2009-06-25 03:54:11

Mcafee doesnt unless it scanning or updating. :P

Umair @ 2009-06-25 03:55:04

true, ive tried plenty of antivirus software, i find kaspersky and nod32 to be perfect in the memory usage department, however taking all factors into consideration kaspersky is number 1, but using AVG, i reckon you are looking for freeware so i guess none of the above two would work for you as they are not free. While shareware doesn't necessarily mean better with software (there are plenty of top quality free software that do better than similar paid software), i find it true with antivirus programs atleast.
Computer Realm @ 2009-06-25 03:56:36

Webroot Internet Security Essentials is an economy based program. it does not use your computer a lot.

Use Avast 4.8 Home Edition. It doesn't slow your PC when it starts up and when in use, low storage, real time scanning, and much more. Try to visit www.download.com and you'll see that in USER rating, Avast has the highest rating! You must then choose USER rating than Editor's rating Isn't it? because users have always has to say.

For your Anti-Virus......(Always use only 1 A-V)

For your anti-virus needs, I would suggest Avira AntiVir® PersonalEdition Classic. It has excellent heuristics, a virus detection rate that is better than many of "paid-for" anti-virus programs and is light on using your computer's resources. And did I mention that it's free!

can I tell if someone was on my computer?
[Question]
If I leave for the day and come home can I tell if someone has got past the administrative password and onto my computer? Also, if keylogger is downloaded would I know?
Michelle @ 2009-06-25 04:03:24

[All Answers]
Yeah, go to your download folder and see what was downloaded. Or just go to program files and see the new installed files.
Nawaz S @ 2009-06-25 04:07:48

i suggest you use one
John N @ 2009-06-25 04:07:53

yes >if you know a lot about computers
no>if you don't know a lot about computers
Tony @ 2009-06-25 04:09:51

If you're good with computers, yes.

But for you I would think you wouldn't know...
Netalarm @ 2009-06-25 04:12:08

well you'd know if you use a keylogger as for knowing if someone had installed a keylogger, if you use a good antispyware/virus program it should detect them.
Computer Realm @ 2009-06-25 04:12:41

You can tell if someone loggen in onto your computer using Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Security and watch for Logon events.

User logins appear to have this inside:

Login Type : 2

New Logon:
Security ID:My-PC\MyUserName

you can also check for login time. You should look carefully at the info in the box for Login (NOT "special login") events. Some are network login attempts (sometimes by the router), other are success (an attempt is usually followed by success). Only those that have the info above are regular user logins.

About identifying keylogger download and installation, there's not clear way to identify that straight from windows (or any app for that matter). There are at least hundreds of keylogger software, most of those are hidden processes within windows and don't appear listed anywhere.

You could either install a packet sniffer or study the firewall logs from windows (also event viewer) but it's a really tedious process, you will have to try each source IP in the list and see if they lead to a keylogger download site.
elven_rangers @ 2009-06-25 04:17:09

why do you think that's happening?
what s happening here @ 2009-06-25 04:19:43

There is a very easy way to tell, providing they have been on the internet.

Open up your internet browser and click on favorites. At the top it should say; favorite's, feeds, and history.

Click on history and you can see if there has been any usage on the day you were not here, and also what sites they visited.

If your history is blank this could also be a tell tale sign as it means they have deleted it!

Hope this helps. :)
focux007 @ 2009-06-25 04:21:18

First are you referring to your bios computer password before windows welcome page comes up or at the windows welcome page? There are programs that you will log all access times of your computer.Just did a search and found this one http://www.sowsoft.com/computer-lock.htm
To my knowledge unless you have anti virus/spyware program (or a program designed specifically for detecting key logging attacks) and keep it updated and scan the computer I don't believe you can tell or know if you have the presence of a key logger.

how is AVAST Anti virus ?
[Question]
avast anti virus 4.8 is better than an of anti virus in market?
mohammed @ 2009-06-25 03:42:55

[All Answers]
No, it is just a free anti virus which isn't that good not even full version. Mcafee and Nod32 are the best anti viruses. But if you want a free one use Avira anti virus.
Nawaz S @ 2009-06-25 03:47:53

i used avast a while back and found it to consume a lot of memory, also detection rate is less than others in the market, there are plenty of comparisons like 'top 10 antivirus' and AVAST usually doesn't make it to the top because of these reasons, i think the best based on the antivirus programs ive tried is Kaspersky, i'm currently tryin nod32 which is also looking impressive.

i've linked to two of the 'top 10' comparisons so you can see for yourself and also my review of kaspersky.
Computer Realm @ 2009-06-25 03:52:40

I use this on my desktop and it's really good. Haven't had a virus or a problem since i got it. Definitely recommend it.
Niki Swan @ 2009-06-25 03:53:05

So long as it is Avast 4.8 Professional I would give a two-thumbs up. Most free edition anti virus have the same features and functions so long as it is updated.

it's good but i think BiDefender Better

Avast anti virus home edition: Anti-spyware built-in

Spyware is software installed on a computer that is designed to collect information about the computer user, often without their knowledge or consent. This can result in so called identity theft, or theft of valuable information (e.g. bank or credit card details) or proprietary business data. Spyware is often developed by organized crime rings rather than lone individuals and may be installed by a virus.

Certified by West Coast Lab's Checkmark process, avast! has full anti-spyware capabilities built-in, to make your protection even more complete.
Anti-rootkit built-in

Rootkits are programs that install on your computer while keeping themselves and their activities hidden to remain invisible to the use. They represent a significant security risk on both home computers and company networks and are notoriously difficult to find and remove. Rootkits themselves are normally installed by a virus or other type of malware infection and it is therefore highly recommended that computer users have up to date antivirus/anti-spyware software installed and running on their computer. One such system is avast! antivirus.

Based on the class-leading GMER technology, avast! can now scan your live system for rootkit infections; no boots disks are required. If a rootkit is discovered, it is initially disabled and then if it can be safely removed without affecting the performance of the computer, it is removed. avast! antivirus includes a virus database which can be automatically updated to provide continuous protection against rootkits.
Strong self-protection

Some viruses may attempt to switch off a computer's antivirus software. To help keep your protection working, even against the latest threats that may try to disable your security protection, avast! has best-in-class strong self-protection built in, to make sure, no matter what you face, avast! carries on protecting your valuable data and programs. This is based on the multi-award winning avast! antivirus technology and provides an extra layer of security to ensure your data and programs are always protected.
Antivirus kernel avast! Checkmark certificate Virus Bulletin Award

The latest version of avast! antivirus kernel features outstanding detection abilities, together with high performance. You can expect 100% detection of In-the-Wild viruses (viruses already spreading between users) and excellent detection of Trojan horses.

The kernel is certified by ICSA; and frequently takes part in the tests of Virus Bulletin magazine, often yielding the VB100 award.

The avast! engine also features outstanding unpacking support. It can scan inside the following archives: ARJ, ZIP, MIME (+ all associated formats), MAPI (Outlook pst files), DBX (Outlook Express archives), RAR, TAR, GZIP, CAB, BZIP2, ZOO, ACE, ARC, LHA/LHX, TNEF (winmail.dat), CPIO, CHM, RPM, ISO, 7ZIP and SIS. It also supports a number of executable packers (such as PKLite, Diet, UPX, ASPack, PeShield, FSG, MEW etc.).

Last, but not least, it can also scan for viruses hidden in Alternate data streams on NTFS volumes. Simple User Interface

The Simple User Interface is used to start on-demand scanning, work with the results and change various options. Basic resident protection settings can be modified here.

The Simple User Interface is the main application of avast! 4 Home Edition. You can start additional avast! modules from here, such as the Virus Chest, Updater or Log Viewer.

The appearance of the Simple User Interface is very flexible. It supports so-called skins, allowing users to change the appearance of the application interface. The main package contains three skins, with additional skins available from our web pages.
Standard resident protection

Resident protection (the real-time protection of the operating system), is one of the most important parts of an antivirus program today. avast! features a powerful resident module that is able to detect a virus before it has any chance to infect your computer.

avast! Home Edition contains resident protection of the computer file system and a resident module for e-mails and news.

File system protection ensures that no virus will be started on the computer. It offers a wide range of settings, such as the possibility to specify that files will be scanned during copying, or that the scanning will include files with given set of extensions only.

E-mail/News protection consists of two independent modules; first, there is a generic scanner working on the SMTP/POP3/IMAP4/NNTP protocol level. It is capable of protecting any existing e-mail client that uses these protocols. Second, there is a special plugin for MS Outlook only; the mail scanning is completely transparent, requiring no special settings.

A new feature of version 4 is heuristic analysis of e-mail scanners. This feature can protect against new, unknown viruses and worms that are not possible to detect by the us

[Question]

Pres ctrl-shift-del, and then click ok, to clear it.

It is free, nothing gets saved on your computer unless you download anything (you would know).

My personal favorites are xnxx.co/m and redtube.co/m
Both sites are extremely NSFW
Tithan Natus @ 2009-06-25 04:07:32

Well, you can get an additional facility in Google Crome browser .. open New incognito window in Google Crome and do whatever you want... there will be no history at all... coz incognito window doesn't show in history..

what is a good porn site blocker?

Blocking Porn Sites

There are several types of software you can install that can help.

* NetDog Porn Filter Clean Internet
* Trusted Filtering
* Sentry Parental Controls

Strongly recommend NetDog Porn Filter, it's the best software to block porn websites on the Internet

Here is more input and advice:

* Depending on your operating system, you can actually control their movement from there. You can block sites.

* Yes there are many ways to block porn sites. You may block these by a third party application or using Internet Explorer Browser settings. In IE Browser click tools > Internet options > security > click on upper Restricted sites icon > then click sites button> here you can add sites that are too dangerous. But all in above help you have to add manually. Blocking porn sites automatically is not 100% effective, but you may increase your privacy bar, decrease your trusted sites bar, and increase your restricted sites bar. This may help you, or set and read complete Internet options settings to get the most information.

* There are several sources of "hosts" files available that will effectively block any site. To block a site, one enters the url with 127.0.0.1 as the IP address in the hosts file. When the url is requested by the browser, the hosts file is checked first for the IP address and used if there. The Internet address 127.0.0.1 is the loop back for every computers ethernet card which tells the browser that the requested site is on the local computer. Not finding the requested url there, the browser will present nothing.

* Another method is to block it in a hardware router, or a firewall. Some or most provide this function. I have a Netgear WGR614 which allows me to do either keyword or domain filtering, but unfortunately this is a cross between reactive blocking and proactive prevention, as there ill always be ways around this, and sites that get past.

Answer

open Internet explorer >tools > Internet options>

click on security tab> restricted site

sites> add the porn site which you want to block.

ThirstForJustice @ 2009-06-25 05:07:26

yo can use a firewall and set it on maximum safety, but careful, if the security level is too high can also block sites that are not malicious
